Clare Turner

Executive recruiter Clare Turner shared how her early life from a long-established Wairarapa farming background, was immensely expanded by Carterton Rotary - when she was selected for a Youth Exchange, which brought the life-changing opportunity of being hosted by a Mexican club in El Paso, Texas.
When Clare joined the workforce in the late 1980s, she soon took the opportunity in London to move from banking, to working for St Johns – where she became conscious of the essential need in voluntary fields, to listen respectfully to everyone’s opinion and work collaboratively.
Today’s turbulent times bring an average of 623 applications per advertised vacancy – and Clare’s key message is that voluntary contributions are a game-changer, in getting your CV to stand out among so many other quality applicants! Volunteering from a young age develops superior leadership and people skills of teamwork, communication and collaboration. The power of what we are doing in the community has never been stronger.
Clare noted that both her parents were proud Rotarians – and the importance of sharing Rotary stories to encourage others to volunteer! Clare spoke directly to the three Interactors from One Tree Hill College who were part of the audience, encouraging them to spread the message to other students, on how volunteering allows you to differentiate yourself and be seen in the world! She also told us about encouraging a famous All Black to return to his old school and model reaching out to others through service - the legacy message of “Put your hand down, to pull people up!”
“No coaches for sports teams these days” is a frequent lament – that provides a brilliant opportunity for adults with time on their hands. Nothing is more powerful than interaction with others.!
