Gardens for Survival
Our speaker at Tuesday's meeting was Peter Jollands from Pakuranga Rotary.
Peter talked to us about Gardens for Survival - an initiative to foster appreciation of gardening in school children and to create links with other groups undertaking similar activities elsewhere in the world.
In summary,
- the program follows Trees for Survival.
- The program is all about longevity for us all .
- Vege pods are a great way for growing as a sprinkler system can be added
- Schools put together the pods with their students.
- the program teaches children gardening skills which are portable,
- Veges are great for eating healthy
- Peter told us that Lady Pippa Blake is involved as a patron
- Peter Jollands is looking to expand the program through schools in the Auckland area. The plan is for rotary clubs to link up with schools for which they are responsible with the vege pods being funded on a 1/3 school, 1/3 rotary club and 1/3 sponsor basis.
An interesting concept which merits closer examination.
