From Co-President Warwick
There were three standouts for me from last Tuesday's meeting:
Firstly, that our Rotary Club continues to make a significant contribution to our community through our Youth programmes (MUNA last week), our educational and research awards (MAPAS last week), volunteering for GoMedia parking raising funds for our REP and RAP programmes, and raising funds for our other programmes through Circus Quirkus.
Secondly, when you have a great speaker as we did on Tuesday, then a digital presentation on screen is very nearly as good as the real thing. It also requires good set-up (thanks David J) and good tech management during the speech (thanks Terry Y). This means that we can cast our net wider for good speakers who can't necessarily be there on the day.
Thirdly, it was a revelation to hear from Andrew Marshall how important the role of film producer is, covering everything from raising the finance before and during, selecting and contracting the actors, selecting the locations, organising the logistics, and everything that moves in between.
I was very impressed by Andrew's speech, and can understand how he is so good at his job in talking all the film participants round to his grand plan. Equally impressive is his CV of working on and producing films such as Whalerider, Power of the Dog, Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and many others in US when he worked there for 6 years. I did enjoy the comments from Andrew's parents Leigh and Betsey Marshall, who attended our meeting, that they were there to hear what their son did!!

Dilworth
Richard Solomon has reported that Rotary Remuera has arranged for Dan Reddiex, Headmaster of Dilworth to speak at their meeting on Monday 8th June, 5.30, and they are graciously inviting our Club to join them in view of our mutual interests in the school.
Richard has had a long relationship with Dilworth and believes this is an important opportunity for our members to accept. Reasons are......
1. Dan Reddiex is sure to deliver a very interesting and positive address, given his role in the rejuvenation of the school from off-the-floor to respected top standards.
2. Our longstanding relationship with the school up until it was assigned to the Remuera Club and ongoing since then on at least 3 projects.
3. Our relationship with the Remuera Club generally and specifically with regard to Dilworth.
4. You will note in his invitation the following significant words.- "for once we can host our parent club, even if it has taken some 46 years to happen!" .
The dinner meeting is on Monday 8th June at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 5.30 for 6.00pm.

Andrew Marshall - Film and TV Producer
Our speaker on Tuesday was Andrew Marshall, a film and TV producer based in Queenstown.
He discussed his experience in the industry and shared insights about producing films and television shows. He explained his work on projects like "Caterpillar" and "A Remarkable Place to Die," highlighting the challenges and processes involved in bringing these projects to life. Andrew emphasized the role of a producer in enabling storytelling through various means, including financing, locations, and people, and encouraged questions from the audience to make the discussion more interactive.
Andrew gave us a history of his career journey in the film industry, starting with studying drama and media studies in high school and later obtaining a film-focused production degree. He described his first break as a production runner in New Zealand and how he quickly advanced to working on The Hobbit in Wellington. Andrew then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked at Walt Disney Studios, negotiating perk packages for actors like Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, before returning to New Zealand to work on films with more creative input.
Andrew discussed his career in film production, sharing experiences from his early work on "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" to producing "The Power of the Dog" and his latest film "Caterpillar." He explained the producer's role in enabling storytelling through managing budgets, casting, locations, and logistics, while noting that producers typically receive less public recognition than directors. The discussion covered film financing in New Zealand, including government funding through the Film Commission and the importance of thinking internationally when developing projects.

Rotary Newmarket needs you to help out with carparking at Mount Smart stadium.
Each game, this activity raises up to $2,000 for the club, or around $60,000 a year. This forms a major part of the funds for the club's youth programmes including RAP and RYPEN. Recently, Go Media Stadium has started blocking the road around the stadium when large crowds are expected meaning we need more volunteers, and the number of volunteers is beginning to fall below a sustainable level. Each game requires 8 volunteers, 3 at 23 Maurice Road and 5 at 5 Maurice Road. We don't expect you to show up every week, that would be silly. However, the more people who volunteer, the less of a commitment it is for each person and the more funds we can raise for the youth programs. You would be expected to arrive 2.5hours before the game starts and help with taking money via cash and EFTPOS and guiding drivers. Usually both parking lots are filled within two hours and after that almost everyone can go home. One or two volunteers would need to stay at 5 Maurice Road until an hour after the game to lock the gate. We'll provide safety vests and EFTPOS machines. We recommend bringing a water bottle.
