Annual Grocery Charity Ball Helpers
Sep 07, 2024 7:00 PM - 11:59 PM

Please reply if you can help or if you know of anyone who can please ask them to contact me

John Hawke

021804922

hawkeyecleaning@gmail.com

Thank you

I have been contacted by Jenny Alison (021-503-060) who is looking for volunteer supports for the Annual Grocery Charity Ball on Saturday 7th September at the Viaduct Events Centre.

Dementia NZ will receive the proceeds.

Currently :

I)13 volunteers are still needed for the evening shift of 5pm – midnight assisting with the live and silent auction proceedings and re-stocking small volumes periodically, as well as packing up after 11pm. While this is a pretty tall ask for many club members it may be something that appeals to RYLArians and a few younger members.

II)2 volunteers are required for the 1:30pm until 5pm shift setting up tables and seating etc

All volunteers will have supervision and a full briefing for their shift. A continuous food will be supplied in the evening and we hope to have Uber vouchers for their transport!

Dinner: Dr Helen Murray
Oct 08, 2024 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Please register or decline before 2pm on Friday 4th October

Meeting Tuesday 8th October 2024
Remuera Golf Club 6-30pm

Our keynote speaker is Dr Helen Murray from the University of Auckland. Helen,
who is based in the Centre for Brain Research (CBR), is one of the country’s
leading experts on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a form of dementia
associated with repetitive head injury. Although CTE can be categorically
diagnosed only after death, neurologists can give a ‘probable’ CTE diagnosis
while people are alive, using an informed process of elimination.
The disease has received greater public attention in recent years as former
professional sportspeople with probable CTE, such as ex-All Black Carl Hayman,
have spoken out about the toll their sports careers have taken on their health.
She has played for the Ice Fernz ice hockey team since 2013, captaining the
side from 2016 to 2022 and also represented New Zealand in inline hockey.
Helen has seen many teammates suffer concussions and has also experienced
her own share of knocks to the head, including a mild concussion this year.

We will also be having a short talk from Sryana Sukhdev who is the 2024 Rotary
Club of Newmarket John Burton Heart Research Awardee. Sry’s work is on brain
blood flow and stroke and how to prevent reperfusion injury.

Don’t know what reperfusion is -come along & find out!!!

Lunchtime Meeting: Henry McGarry
Oct 22, 2024 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Henry is the next generation of young aspiring builders servicing the wider Auckland Region. He finished his education at Kings College in 2014 – thoroughly enjoying his time, at Kings the careers department encouraged surgeons and lawyers – being a builder was somewhat secondary. Henry completed his building apprenticeship with BCITO in about 3 years, then started Concept Carpenters in 2017, arguably what he was distended for after mowing lawns for people’s money while at primary school.

Fast-forward to today, Henry has established Concept Carpenters to a team of 14, specialising in quality residential projects.

Henry recently connected with Charlotte and Paul at One Tree Hill College to assist with their gateway programme, he has chatted to the graduates of 2022 and 2023 - hopefully inspiring their future endeavours.

Henry and his team have also more recently been assisting with transforming the ex-state house.

Fellow Rotarians,

You are invited to the Presentations on Rotary Youth activities and events that have taken place over the past twelve months in the Auckland area. THE INVITATION IS ATTACHED

This event involves young people giving short presentations on how they have benefited from their experiences in attending events such as RYPEN, MUNA, RYDA and the National Science Forum as well as gaining an understanding of some other High School programs such as the Rotary Enrichment Program , Post High School study scholarships and the Walsh Flying School Scholarship to name just a few.

The evening is run and facilitated by a team of RYLA Alumni drawn from participants over the past 4-5 years.

We are confident that you will gain a good understanding of how these programs are benefitting young people in our district and be entertained in the process.

This is a dinner event and places will be limited, so if you are interested in attending, please reserve the date and RSVP as soon as you decide you wish to attend.
